Funny How That Works

Monday, February 27th, 2006

Today was rough, no doubt about it. Everything I touched broke. Literally. A motherboard, a compiler, a server and a website. Fried, borked, glitchy and hacked. Add to that a louder than normal 240 HMMB and throw in impending deadlines, and you have general agita with no immediate relief.

Clearly I should be doing something else

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

My readings today, both relevant and procrastinative, have made me loathe academics and academia. And then I remembered I’m an academic.

Oh yeah.

It’s time to write more and pretend I know what I’m talking about, and more over, give the illusion that what I do is actually important. And helpful. To [...]

A Humbling Meal

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

I (used to) think I am (or that I was) a decent cook. My roast chicken is consistently praised, and I can make a budget flank steak surprisingly tender and juicy.

Well I can’t cook. Justin and Corienne can cook. Oh my. Let’s break it down:

Good Luck Adriaan!

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

My pal Adriaan is checking into the hospital today to have a nasty little lump removed. I first knew him through ecto (the very tool I use to write this tripe), but he showed me a great time during my stay in Tsukuba, taking me out for the best gyoza I’ve ever had, hands [...]

Thoughts on Grunge

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

I heard “pretty noose” for the first time in years the other day, and I remembered grunge. Somehow it was clear that Down on the Upside was to be the end of grunge. Dare I say that Ultramega OK was the beginning of grunge. Soundgarden always the consummate barometer. Grunge [...]

Evil

Friday, February 17th, 2006

You need something for which to care, SBC, indeed.

I normally try to limit my derision to the TellMe system that directs me to the poor sap who has to enforce the Company Line, and I did ok as I tried to explain that her company was screwing me over a paltry some of money.

I did [...]
